Freedom vs. Safety

2017
Provocative, participatory, and dialogical voting system.

Freedom and safety are often presented as opposite qualities. In this project, we aim to question this artificial binary antagonism. We create a situation where both –the need for safety and the drive for freedom– are equally fulfilled. Project Safety vs. Freedom exhibits surface as a record of collective activity.

  • Freedom vs. Safety: a white surface records six numbered ultramarine shapes, one stripy, 'SAFETY VS. FREEDOM' on top
  • Freedom vs. Safety: voting system objects drift on white, a striped stick, a cyan-pink blob, a checkered polyhedron
  • Freedom vs. Safety: participatory voting objects on white, a cyan-pink blob, a checkered polyhedron, a striped stick
  • Freedom vs. Safety: text-heavy poster, blue blobs gather like a collective record on white under 'SAFETY VS. FREEDOM'
